College Essay Final

Discuss how your family’s experience or cultural history enriched you or presented you with opportunities or challenges in pursuing your educational goals.

The Vietnam War ended in 1975 to the power of Ho Chi Minh and his Viet Minh communist party in North Vietnam. Fifteen years later, my grandparents and parents fled the country to settle down in America. My parents came to America with nothing but the hopes that they will make a better life for themselves. Knowing that, it was a given that they were going to be unfamiliar with the American culture and language. This was a factor that made me different from all my American raised friends. Growing up, my parents taught my siblings and I the Vietnamese language, traditions, and manners. My parents were able to teach me anything about my culture.
One lesson taught us that long ago, the Vietnamese people always valued education because it defined your rank in society. That education is the key to success. That it opens doors for people of all backgrounds and it expands the human mind with knowledge. It prepares individuals to solve problems, teach others, function at a higher level, and implement transformational ideas. Without education, ones chances for securing a career and ascending to a higher economic and social status are limited. So that being said, my parents were always strict that it made me fear them since I was little. It was not fear where I was terrified, but where I loved and respected them so much that meeting their expectations was important. I knew that everything was from love because they wanted the best for me so that I won't have to go through the struggles they had faced growing up.
I did my best in all my classes, participated in student council, and received recognition certificates to prove myself. In elementary, my parents bought me those practice books that were a level higher so that I wasn't the student who fell behind. They made sure I applied myself to the lessons by ripping out all the answer pages in the back or stapling them crazy shut so that it wasn't possible to even peek. My aptitude for learning was a lot higher than most of my peers because of all those extra workbook practices. Despite my parents efforts for my readiness, it had both a pro and con effect on me. I lacked motivation because many things were not brought as a strenuous challenge to me and if otherwise then I didn't bother applying myself to it, accepted the fact that I wasn't good at it, and received the acceptable score instead.
Now that I am in my second year of high school, my parents have been bringing up college and what plans I have for myself. I had no idea how to reply. I began to think about my future. I reflected on who I am, what I valued, my skills, and what my interests were. I fantasized about what a successful life would be like, returned to reality, then created goals that'll direct me toward the near future. I had to change my perspective of dealing with difficult challenges in order to proceed my roadmap.
Its a struggle to change myself, but its for the better. I take on challenges welcomely and stay determined where I don't back down till what I want is fulfilled.
I made it a must to continue my education after high school. To further my knowledge so that the chances of securing a promising career broadens. I believe that a college education will be the gateway to me fulfilling my career pathway so that I am able to provide my family's wants and needs and to simply make them proud. My family's experience and cultural history has made me the person I am today with opportunities such as the ability to use the power of knowledge to direct myself to success. I am grateful for parents sacrifice all so that their children deserve nothing less than the best knowledge and values.

Paragraph Thing

In honor of St. Patricks's day, Mrs. Murphy called in an order for a party platter of corned beef.  The restaurant said that it would take about 15 minutes for delivery. After she ended the call, she hooked it up to the aux and blasted her Irish music. The speakers jumped and the crowd partied. Her dance skills were more honorable than Drake's moves in his hotline bling MV. She took a break from the event as she noticed the delivery guy unloading his car from across the street. She stood at the opposite end of the road as the delivery guy approached. In the distance, a loud noise came racing closer. Before she knew it, the delivery guy was struck by the speeding cargo truck. Mrs.Murphy was then heartbroken when she realized the corn beef was splattered all over the road. She stood still complaining about how the whole platter went to waste.

It was black Friday and KFC had a limited bucket deal. Mr. Smee was KFC's lucky customer who got the very last bucket. The rest of the customers left were not planning to leave without a deal so they chased after him in hopes that they at least get a single piece of chicken. The hard working family men shouted and charged after him. Mr. Smee managed to untangle himself through the tight crowd to the front of the herd of men. The whole scene was a complete ruckus. The William brothers managed to catch up and throw a few swings to weaken his grip off the bucket, but Mr. Smee released one arm from the bucket to blocked one of throws and extended his other arm and shot an elbow strike to the other brother. The grease from the chicken began to drip through his grey shirt as he adjusted the bucket closer to his chest. He grasped the bucket with an even tighter grip as he regained motivation from the scent of the extra crispy fried chicken. All he though about was making into his car and finally taking a rewarding bite out of the remaining pieces of chicken.

College Choices

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON
Seattle
Founded in 1861, UW is one of the oldest universities on the West Coast and features one of the most highly regarded medical schools in the world. This school is an elected member of the Association of American Universities, and its research budget is among the highest in the U.S. It has both a traditional mascot (Harry the Husky) and also a live one (Dubs)! The setting of the campus is also very pretty. I like that in the spring, cherry blossoms bloom making the campus even more attractive.

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY
Illinois
Bordered by the Great Lake and a global city, NU ranks #12 for national university and #19 for school of medicine. ~ 51% of undergraduates receive a NU scholarship, which does not need to be repaid. Evanston has beaches, shops, and restaurants to explore with just a train ride away to the city. NU's Feinberg School of Medicine is on the Chicago campus and is adjacent to several closely affiliated hospitals. The neighborhood contains a combination of hotels, restaurants, professional office centers, medical facilities, and cultural venues. NU is a large university with a comprehensive doctoral program and attracts over $550 million in sponsored research each year.

UNIVERISTY OF NOTRE DAME
Indiana
The campus looks amazing. I like its Gothic architecture and park like landscape, exquisite outdoor sculpture, and breathtaking views. It is dedicated to religious beliefs no less than scientific knowledge. Their students come from all over the U.S. and 100+ countries. ND offers rigorous academics, NCAA D1 athletics, and events/activites to create an environment for students to have opportunities to do good.

Final

"We are happy to congratulate you on your acceptance to MMS.." In that moment I felt as if I had won the last golden ticket to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. These were the very words that had changed my life. It was what every GE applicant hopes to see as they open their letters. However, I was terrified to attend a school far away from home. I was going to a completely unfamiliar place where I didn't know anyone. The fact that I had to leave my old friends behind and make new ones. The thoughts constantly ran through my mind as if I was moving to another country. I was scared of people I haven't even met, that I would be that "new girl", and that others would not like me. To make things worse, I didn't have a choice but to go to summer school.

Before middle school started, I learned how to play the Viola. It was the first string instrument that I ever played. So the only way to get better was to keep practicing. I made it my goal to be just as good as those who already knew how to play. During the summer, I was seated in the second to the last row.By mid quarter I was bumped up to section leader. I was extremely proud of myself knowing that my hard work and determination payed off. Being in an ensemble taught me how to be responsible for my learning, to look out for others, and to perform my best.

Middle school came to an end and it was time to register for high school. This meant that I needed to reapply a GE and that I was left waiting all summer long to find out if I was able to continue going to school in Moanalua. After two years of orchestra, I felt that I wasn't as interested in doing it in high school so I decided to give MeneMac a shot. I had no choice but to go to summer school again for the third year in a row. However, this time I was going to a new school where I knew people. I took my performance skill from orchestra and applied it to my summer PE  class. The course wasn't so bad because it pushed me to work hard through the physical pain and to mentally get over whatever was holding me back.

School started before I could finish my mile run for PE. As I complained about it, I realized how fast time passed. Then it hit me that it was the first day of high school tomorrow and that I needed to set an agenda for myself in my upcoming high school career. I couldn't stick to my goals 100% because of how everything was so new with the integrated media classes, world language, and extra curricular activities happening throughout the year. As school was back in session, I slowly began to slip and fall behind in school. I struggled in my math, english, and biology. It wasn't like middle school where I was actively involved and self applied to my classes. At times when my grades would slip from A's to B's to C's and the worse was a D,  I'd lose motivation and let them slip to a totally unacceptable standard. When this happened to me in math, I was almost done with even bothering to try. However I did the opposite by getting help, redid my tests and raised my grade up to a B. It was one of the times when I needed to face reality and get crap done. So I had to change my ways. The fun and games were over. It was time to get down to working.

I continued the rest of the year by completing quality work before they were due and coming in for help when there was a slight chance of me falling behind. I was better at math because I actively listened and participated in class. Some things haven't changed like my writing skills. I was strong in other standards but I struggled in English because of MY TERRIBLE WRITING. To be honest I feel like this one sucks because my story is weak but, I just need to write more to get better. What I learned through my first year of high school was that no one will wait for me if I fall behind and that everything should be done in the smallest amount of time but with quality. I still have two more years to go and have many more obstacles to overcome. One obstacle right now is to get back into staying determined and motivated to be on top of my school work. Life will not give you what you want without you earning it. Knowing this, I am going to get things together so that I don't fall behind again and to actively commit to what matters to me and exceed in it. The only way to succeed in anything is to commit to it.

Concrete Practice

As One Direction came out singing "Drag Me Down", Kelly, Julie, and Kathy immediately cried in disbelief that the band was standing right in front of them. Many other directioners shouted, jumped, and shoved as Harry Styles started the song. The blue and red lights beamed brightly at everyone in the crowd. The fans screamed louder than you standing near a space shuttle launch. While Kelly extended her arm to hopefully grasp one of the band members hand, Julie was pushed against the metal bars. After being unconscious for a second on the concrete ground, she managed to endure the pain holding herself up during the rest of the concert. The girls were so happy to be at a One Direction concert that they would risk their hearing, lose their voices, and getting a few bruises.

Yesterday, the house smelt like freshly baked cookies when I walked in. It was national cookie day and my grandma had made some mac nut cookies in honor of it. The oven timer went off as I was in the living room watching TV. She served it to me right when my favorite show was back from commercials. I appreciated her offer like always, but never tasted it right away. Because she was really eager to get feedback on how it tasted, she whipped out her hand gun and flicked its barrel around once pointing it towards the TV. She repeated herself once more persuading me to try her cookies. I shot my arm straight toward the cookie jar and popped one in my mouth. The crisp golden bite sized cookie crunched as I chewed and tasted buttery flour cookies.  I looked at my grandma who was laughing hysterically at how easy it was to scare me. I never disobeyed her from that day on.

That man is not the real father of the two sisters. He is not even a real soldier. This was one of the few photo shoots I had staged for a photo contest. The girls were actually laughing most of the time and one girl let go and fell right off the soldier's back. She lied there on the lawn with grass stains on her bright pants. She struggled a little trying to get back up into position as I snapped the photo. The guy started to cramped so he let out a muffled grunt. -----------------------------------------

Coming Of Age

"We are happy to congratulate you on your acceptance to MMS.." In that moment I felt as if I had won the last golden ticket to Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. These were the very words that had changed my life. It was what every GE applicant hopes to see as they open their letters. However, I was terrified to attend a school far away from home. I was extremely proud of myself knowing that my hard work and determination payed off. My next challenge was to effectively lead my section. To do so, I worked on exaggerating my bow strokes and pizz so that the other violists knew what was going on. I learned how to communicate with my section verbally and non verbally. Being in an ensemble taught me how to lead others, responsible for doing what's needed, and be dependable.

Middle school came to an end and it was time to register for high school. This meant that I needed to reapply a GE and that I was left waiting all summer long to find out if I was able to go to school with u new friends I had made from middle school.  To better my chance of acception, My parents gave me an option to continue orchestra or enroll into me emac. As school was back in session, I slowly began to slip and fall behind in school. I struggled in my math, english, and biology class. Angry Letter

home address

Mililani Tech Park Office
200 Akamainui St
Mililani, Hi 96789

Dear Oceanic Time Warner Cable Administration,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the internet services provided by your company in my home.

On your website, you had mentioned that your company uses technology that guarantees fast, reliable, and unlimited internet connection. However, this does not seem to be true.
Many people – including me – have been facing poor connectivity problems for a few months now. The internet connection goes in and out during important times of the day and it is so frustrating. Don’t get me wrong, I love it because it’s actually fast when it’s working properly. I just hate it that the internet connection isn’t consistent. Sometimes it goes out for a few minutes, sometimes for a few hours and it kills my vibe. What am I paying for if I can’t even use it when I want?

In this day and age, everyone is on the internet whether it'd be for work, school work, or leisure activities such as Netflix or Hulu. All these require a good internet connection and consistent one to stream.

I have called multiple times and it’s the same every single time. They check my area for outages, then tell me that they don’t see anything wrong with it. From there, they advise me to check my modem and to unplug it in order to reset it. It seems to work while we’re on the phone, but the internet will still go in and out later that day. We’ve already received a new modem, and bought a new Apple airport.

I love Oceanic Time Warner Cable, but it's so frustrating and an inconvenience when my internet connection drops. Is there anyway someone can come and check out the problem to possibly resolve it?

Thank you for the taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,

Trinna Tran

Practically every teenager owns a smart phone. And there had always been an argument between which smart phone was better. Many are either team iPhone or team Samsung. But when phone qualities and features are put aside, the real issue for teens is facing cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is the use of electronic communication devices to bully a person. Examples of cyber bullying include mean text messages, rumors, embarrassing pictures, or videos posted on social networking sites or fake profiles. The growth of social media has created an online world that has benefits and potential harms to adolescents. A saddening disease to occur is Depression. It is a mental illness characterized by hopelessness and despair. Adolescents who reported being bullied online are at an increased risk for depression. Depression from cyber bullying links to negative mental health, worsening to suicidal attempts, harm to others and substance abuse.

The review of studies indicated that cyber bullying was consistently associated with an increased likelihood of depression. Investigators discovered the most common strategies adolescents used to cope with cyber bullying were passive, such as blocking the sender, ignoring or avoiding messages, and protecting personal information. In contrary, for some teens, cigarette smoking relaxes them, providing a temporary escape from stress and anxiety. But cell phones and computers themselves are not to blame for cyber bullying. Social media sites can be used for positive activities, like connecting kids with friends and family, helping students with school, and for entertainment. The more reasonable link to teen depression is the lack of emotional support from people closest to the teen. The main issue causing the disaster is their state of mind. The feeling of worthlessness makes the single teen think that they don't deserve to live and that unhealthy treatment to themselves is right. Smoking temporarily relieves the teen, which reduces the idea of seeking suicide as their permanent solution. Fortunately, treatment options for depressed and suicidal teens are available, highly proven to effectively help.

Depression introduces a confusing series of emotions to a teenager already confused by the physical and mental changes adolescence brings. Teenagers need the emotional support from loved ones. Those who lack emotional support develop negative mental health. When teens don't know how to manage their feelings, they develop ineffective coping techniques in attempt to relieve the pain. Psychologists, therapists, and counselors all provide open hearts and ears for teenagers seeking for help. A combination of medications and psychological counseling is very effective for most teens with depression. " The Food and Drug (FDA) had approved two medications for teen depression - fluoxetine (Prozac) and esccitalopram (Lexapro) (Mayo Clinic)" "Psychotherapy can help your teen regain a sense of happiness and control and help ease depression symptoms such as hopelessness and anger (Mayo Clinic)" These treatment options provide support and counseling needed while teens go through recovery. The need for emotional support opens new relationships to the teen when they seek for help.

"Social media is a ubiquitous extension in the lives of young people, with reports indicating 95 percent of American teenagers use the Internet and that 81 percent of them use social media" (Nauert)
The Constant ridicule and torment can also have lasting effects on youth’s sense of how they identify and react to problems. In addition, children who are bullied may go on to harm others. The buildup of resent to the abuser makes the person want to strike back. The humility draws the victim to have intrusive thoughts of aggressive harm to others. This mindset makes the adolescent go crazy and often resulting in hostile behavior. They'll feel agitated, restless, or even violent. Their tolerance level is low, short tempered, and everything and everyone gets on their nerves. In many cases, aggressive behavior is due to exposure to violence. Aggressive behavior is intentional and emotional problems are the most common cause of it. "Aggressive behavior can be reactive, or in retaliation. It can also be proactive, as an attempt to provoke a victim (Gabbey)"

A recent study by the US National Institutes of Health, reported by Reuters, found that victims of cyber bullying showed more signs of depression than other bullying victims. Depression can have a number of serious effects on a person’s life. Teens who are depressed may say they want to be dead or may talk about suicide. They feel that suicide is a deserved punishment or that the world would be a better place without their existence. "The article, by researchers Jeffrey A. Bridge and others, examined the risk factors concerning adolescent suicide. Bridges found that approximately 15% to 25% of teens have thoughts of suicide through adolescence, from minor thoughts of death to actual suicide plans. "Similar to drug use and cutting, suicide is often thought of as an “escape” from symptoms of depression or problems plaguing the teenager. But unlike drug use and cutting, this escape is sought as a permanent solution"(All Psychology Careers) "Actual suicide attempts range from 1.3% to 3.8% in boys, and up to 10.1% in girls (All Psychology Careers)"

Cyber bullying is nothing new. Social media sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are all popular sites for connecting friends but are also commonly used to commit the act of cyber bullying. Anyone involved in the latest social media sites and apps are all likely to get hurt online. Studies found that those involved in any sort of bullying were at greater risk for depression whether the behavior was physical violence or verbal taunts. Online or offline, parents and adults should be more aware of their child's internet use. Teens who become depressed because of online harassment complicate their health to far more critical health risks. The lack of emotional support influences substance abuse, intrusive thoughts about others, and self harm. Being involved in an adolescents life and supporting them will help them deal with difficult experiences appropriately through the stages of change.

MERCHANT OF VENICE FINAL

“The self-indulgent man craves for all pleasant things... and is led by his appetite to choose these at the cost of everything else.” A quote from Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics philosophizes the cause and effects of unenlightened self interest. William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice discloses many major themes like race, friendship, love, judgement and justice. The plot revolves around a Venetian merchant who fails to repay a loan to a hated moneylender. The play's story significantly signifies how bad self indulgence makes a person look in our society.

He approaches his friend Antonio, a merchant and shares about his plan to woo Portia, the girl of his dreams. "In Belmont there is a rich heiress. She is beautiful. And whats better, she has wonderful qualities. She has shown by her looks that she favors me. She is called Portia no way inferior to Cato's daughter, Portia, the one who married Brutus. Not that the world at large is ignorant of her worthiness. Famous suitors come from the four corners of the earth. Her fair hair is golden fleece that attracts many Jasons to the Belmont shore. Oh, Antonio - I feel convinced I'd be successful if only I had the money to make myself a rival!" Bassanio's goal is obviously love. Being caught up with his plans, he doesn't realize how much trouble Antonio would be in for helping him out with his marriage.
"Oh sweet Portia! Here are some of the most unpleasant words that ever bottled paper. Gentle last, when I first revealed my love for you, i freely told you all the wealth I owed was in my veins. I was a gentleman, and told you the truth. And yet, dear lady, in rating myself at 0, you will see how boastful I was. When I told you I had nothing, I should have added I was worse than nothing. Actually, I am indebted to a dear friend, and to swell my funds I've made my friend indebted to his worst enemy. Here is a letter, lady. The paper represents the body of my friend, and every word written in it a gaping wound, leaking lifeblood. It id true, Salerio? Have all his investments failed? Not one success? From Tripoli, Mexico, and England from Lisban, Barbary and India? And not one vessel has survived the fearful tough of shipwrecking rocks?" Individual intentions may benefit us, but it may also affect others around us. Before this, Antonio negotiated a loan with a Jewish money lender, Shylock, who hates Antonio because of Antonio’s racist behavior towards him. Antonio's careless financial judgement lead to an unfortunate encounter.

Goals could be intended either good or bad.
"To bait fish with! If it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge. He has disgraced me, and hindered me  half a million times. He has laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nationality, obstructed my deals, alienated my friends, incensed my enemies. And his reason I am Jew. Hasn't a Jew got eyes, hasn't a Jew got hands, organs, limbs, senses, affections, passions? Isn't he fed the same foods? hurt by the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooked by the winter and summer, as a christian is if you prick us do we not bleed, if you tickle us do we not laugh if you poison us do we not die, and if you do wrong to us shall we not seek revenge if a Jew wrongs a Christian what is his natural response revenge if a Christian wrongs a Jew what should his penalty be by Christian example why revenge! The villainy you teach me I will carry out and I will go one better given half the chance." All anyone wants in this world is justice. Throughout history, the goal has always been equality, and in honesty it is still something being fought for. For example, many states are passing gay marriage, but a few aren't which is  causing many protests and bill initiatives.
"What judgement should I dread, having done wrong? There are those among you who have purchased slaves. Like your asses, your dogs and your mules, you use there for wretched and servile  jobs, because you bought them. Shall I say to you: " let them go free. marry them to your heirs, why do they sweat carrying burdens? Let their beds be as soft as yours and their food be as choice? You will reply: "The slaves and our " I answer you likewise. The pound of flesh which I demand from his was expensive to pay. It's mine, and I will have it! If you deny it to me, I scorn your laws! The decrees of Venice have no force! I insist on justice. Answer; shall I have it?" Revenge is  a big part  in greed. A man who seeks only revenge towards his enemies will only live unhappy because  of the stretch they're willing to go through. What motivated Shylock to get his bond was the years of constant racist treatment.
Drawing to a close, The Merchant of Venice's subject matter was self interest. The two scenarios given above were examples of greed; love and revenge. Bassanio's dream girl and Shylock's vengeance. Because Antonio loved Bassanio, he unwillingly took a risk for him. He took responsibility for Bassanios debt which forced others not involved to help resolve the situation. Weather its a good/bad intention or a short/long term purpose, there's always its pros and  cons.  The texual evidence show that a desire in something for ourself could majorly change your relationships and your reputation. Self interest is good, but it can be beneficial for everyone including yourself if bad then selfishness. The moral is that all actions come along with consequences and responsibilities.

William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice discloses many major themes like race, friendship, love, judgement and justice. Everyone has goals no matter your reasons, weather its short term or long term.

Merchant of Venice Questions 2

Revisiting Portia's situation, why is the choosing of a man suitable for her out of her hands?
For Portia, choosing a suitable man for her is out of her hands because her father wants her to marry someone with power, good fortune, and security to make them more powerful.

Who is Shylock? What is his importance in the story so far?
Shylock is a Jewish merchant. He is making a deal with Bassanio and Antonio for money. Antonio and Bassanio meet up with Shylock to ask money from him in hopes that Bassanio would go "woo" Portia and although unsure, Shylock agrees to their proposition.

What is the agreement Shylock and Antonio come to terms with?
Shylock gives Bassanio three thousand ducats for three months with Antonio as the guarantor. In return, Antonio must repay him. If he doesn't then Shylock gets to cut a pound of flesh.

Why is Shylock so hesitant of this agreement with Antonio? While answering this question you should also explain their history and relationship between each other.
Shylock is hesitant with this agreement because Antonio is Christian and he is a Jew. Shylock is not very fond of Antonio. Antonio spit on and kicked Shylock and called him a dog. Antonio would spread rumors about Shylock not having quality products because he is a Jew or vise versa and that caused a lot of tension between the two which is why Shylock didn't want to trust Antonio with his money.

Would you trust Antonio? Why or why not?
I would not trust Antonio because he is cocky about his wealth and also mean to other merchants and also to Jewish people. If someone were to be racist and mean towards me, I wouldn't lend him my money because why would I even trust him with my possessions anyway.

Many times people say friends dont make good business partners, or you should never live with your best friends. Why do you think this is so? Is it smart that Antonio and Shylock are doing business together?
Corroboration with your best friends usually doesnt work out because you either end up fooling around on the task or you both disagree ending your relationship. I dont think its smart that Antonio and Shylock are doing business together, although they arent bffs because of the negative tensions between the two.

Anticipation Guide: Merchant of Venice

  • Don’t rely on outward appearances when making judgments.
I agree with this statement because basing judgement based off appearance isn't always reliable. Before meeting someone or doing something new, automatically your head fills with thoughts of fear,  you're most likely not as sociable as you usually are, and you're basically not yourself. Looks can be very deceiving sometimes the greatest looking people are the worst people to be around and vise versa. I believe that relying on outward appearances is not only hurtful to a person but it could be a disadvantage to you, for you could miss out on a great friend who could possibly be a best friend or family to you. On the first day of school, I felt nervous and scared because it was high school and there are many unfamiliar  students and even new teachers. Once i got to know my classmates and teachers it was better than I had anticipated and  I overcame this fear because this happens to everyone and anybody else would understand this situation.
  • Justice is always blind.
I disagree with this statement because although everyone has the right to justice, today there are still cases where discrimination still happens. No matter the age, height, skin color, gender, religion, etc. Whoever responsible for a crime should be accountable for their actions and face the consequences. I have a friend who lost his mom because a man had shot her at a stoplight while on the way home from picking her daughter up from work. Although he had a little mental disability, he still had to go to jail because of the crime he had committed. However, tragedies like Ferguson, Missouri show bias towards skin color. A white police officer had shot a black teenage boy. Protestors and riots became when the officer was prosecuted and let
"off the hook" I believed that more should have been reviewed because it doesn't seem like everything possible was done to resolve this case peacefully.
  • A brotherly love between two friends can be just as strong as an intimate love between a man and a woman.
I agree with this because a bond between two humans is no different no matter the gender, skin color, sexuality, etc. Love is not something that belongs to one kind of pair. It can be claimed by anybody involved in a relationship with someone they have affection/care for. A huge similarity between this comparison is that anything will be done for a loved one. For example, one of the brothers and a person from the other relationship both were in debt. In both relationships, the other half would do anything to help their loved one because they care and the person has a significance to that individual.
  • You can break a promise as long as you have a good excuse
I  agree with this because a promises are breakable if the reason is valid concerning the reality of the relationship. Keeping your word is important is very crucial between a relationship with someone of trust because it tests truly how much you value that friendship. Promises vary between levels of task and difficulty, from small and big to easy and hard. Promises determine weather a person is someone who you actually care about and it confirms if what kind of relationship you have. (bros for life or friend/acquaintance) Promises should only be broken rarely. I believe that promises should be broken with a valid excuse only if its appropriate because of the circumstances. The excuse shouldnt be something sounding too careless.
  • Love is blind.
I agree because I believe sexuality, race, gender, and age don't define love. A video that I watched online titled "Love has no Labels" taught me that love is love. There was a giant X-ray screen shows various couples & families at the skeletal level, dancing and kissing, as curious crowds gather. Then, the individuals walk around of the screen to reveal themselves—some are homosexual, some straight, some of different races, some differently abled, etc.  proving that love looks the same and is universal.
  • Stereotypes are often right.
I agree with this statement because society has the knowledge of people a certain way do to race.  It really varies about one's environment, education, influences, and interests. Nobody is created the same, each individual is unique despite their race. Unfortunately, many people believe in these stereotypes because some are true/relate-able to races. Not everyone admits to this, but everyday people are sorted into categories and groups in our society and even in our own minds. Although many are who are proving this false, its sad to know that often stereotypes can be true, yet disappointing.
  • An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is a good motto to live by.
I disagree with this statement because living life for revenge is unjust. Life should not be spent resenting someone and living unhappily. Everything happens for a reason and its up to us to how we want to take it. The right way to resolve a grudge is to let it go because living well is the best revenge. Moving forward will advance you to better things in life, big and small.

RESEARCH AND CHARACTER ANALYSIS

The Great Depression was America's most biggest financial downfall. The stock market went down, banks foreclosed, and jobs were lost. The book "Of Mice Of Men" by John Steinbeck takes place in the 1930's on a California ranch. The time period in which the Great Depression occurred. Because this story took place during this time, the main characters George and Lennie were migrant workers who were financially affected by this and scrambled for work. Money was much valued that small amounts today were worth so much. The struggles during this time were difficult, but different from the problems today. The two motivate each other through hardships by sharing the goal of owning a ranch and tending such animals and crops for themselves. In this companionship, George is the bright one who takes responsibility of Lennie due to his mental condition. It doesn't state that he's mentally retarded, but it's obvious given from his behavior towards situations in the past on the last and current jobs.

GEORGE MILTON
In "Of Mice Of Men" the character that stood out to me the most was George Milton. During this period of struggle, he still strives for success and at the same time looks after Lennie. Of the two men, he plays the dominate role. George's behavior is motivated by the desire to protect Lennie and, eventually deliver them both to their farm dreams. His personality often reflects both anger and understanding, but that's because he faces the challenges of taking care of someone who's mentally disabled. Although he frequently complains about how easier life would be without his caretaking responsibilities, he doesn't mean it because he obviously is devoted to his companionship with Lennie.

George is the one who thinks things through and considers how their goals can be reached. He does everything possible to get both him and Lennie work. He foresees possible complications and gives Lennie advice about what he must do in order to help their future. Although George repeatedly gets angry at Lennie, he manages to quickly calm knowing that Lennie doesn't know any better. Because he's the adult in the relationship, George makes it possible for Lennie sometimes to understand at least partial consequences of his actions. George Milton is a friend, a caretaker, a hard worker, and a leader.

MICE OF MEN RESEARCH

A migrant worker is a casual worker who moves from region to region to work temporarily, mostly on farms. "Farm work is one of the most hazardous occupations in the country." Living and working conditions for these workers are highly inadequate. Pesticide exposure is one of the greatest health hazards for farm workers.  Migrant workers also often have limited rights and access to health services because of their illegal and alien status.  The average annual income for migrant workers is below the poverty level at $7500. "Housing is often a problematic issue for farmworkers" This is somewhat due to the fact that some state laws for housing is very precise. This forces some workers to live in vehicles unless they can find a place to rent. Migrant workers typically have a tough time with daily life whether it be with working conditions or living conditions. On top of all of these difficulties, their income is usually just enough for them to get by.
International labour migration is the movement of people from one country to another for the purpose of employment.
“Millions of women and men around the world are denied access to jobs and training, receive low wages, or are restricted to certain occupations simply on the basis of their sex, skin color, ethnicity or beliefs, without regard to their capabilities and skills.” In certain countries women earn 25% less wage than males do. The freedom of people rights all around the world should be equalized no matter what your gender is, ethnicities, etc. Yet, some parts of the country, the government has yet to enforce this to the people. “Most people work in order to earn money. Yet, in many parts of the world access to adequate and regular wages is not guaranteed.” There are many ways to pay off wages. They could be paid in bonds, manufactured goods, or even alcohol, however, there are consequences for those who don’t pay off the wage. In some countries, many workers have lost their job due to their company getting bankrupt by a loss of wages (not being paid off). Laborers look at how national labour standards are applied within their workplace/ the work being produced.  They advise the employers and workers on how to improve the national law in such matters as “working time, wages, occupational safety and health, and child labour.” You are who you are and no one can change that but no matter what the quote “all men should be treated equally” should get enforced to other countries out there who has yet to apply it to their people.
The numbers of migrant workers in search of job opportunities rose during America's downturns. "In the 1930s, a combination of droughts, the depression, and the increased mechanization of farming prompted a migration of small farmers and laborers from Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas to the W United States." During the Great Depression, many unemployed individuals took any work available in efforts to make money. Several years from recovery, California's booming agriculture economy caused a great demand for farm labor. "It was estimated that this type of permanent migrant worker, without home, voting privileges, or union representation, numbered more than 3 million." Since the 1940's, each year thousands of workers have been brought into the United States from foreign countries such as Mexico and China. Many contractors hired workers from these foreign countries because of the cheap labor. Migrant workers did any type of job to earn money even if it were low or if it had them constantly traveling.

A CONEY ISLAND LIFE FINAL

We were all born into this world to serve a purpose. Having the ability to think for ourselves, we make choices that will pave a sustainable pathway. To do so, we set our standards and we exceed them. Author of the poem "A Coney island Life" James L. Weil compares his life to the ups and downs and rotations of Coney island's roller coasters and carousels. Weil's message in"A Coney island Life" is to never settle for less because you don't want to regret the opportunities that you didn't take.

Time is limited and you don't get it back once it has passed. "My helium hopes break skyward without me" Setting high standards is easy, but accomplishing them wont be. Regaining hope after losing hope is the best and only way to continue on. "now arms fill with doll I threw so much for." The ending result is what was done to get this far, all the effort and sacrifices that were made during the long journey. Giving up because of one mistake isn't an option, but taking & learning from it is. All the hard work & dedication will pay off because of all of the opportunities that will come.

Don't count the days, but make the days count. "how many more times round I have to catch the brass-ring sun before the game is up." No one knows exactly how much how long life will be. Therefore, do as much things before the opportunity is taken away "I take perhaps my last ride on this planet carousel"  Fooled into thinking that was it, but actually theres one last bit of chance left. Making choices should be decided as if there was no tomorrow.

The motive behind determination and hard work is life's ultimate goal. Happiness. Because everyone strives for the great feeling of accomplishment. No one said that achieving goals was ever easy. Encountering faults and difficulties will always occur, but its a choice to face and overcome it. Surely sacrifices are made, but they all just prove its value and why it was believed in it the first time.

I AM POEM FINAL

My protective covering shelters our deal.
I contain your basic daily needs.
Sometimes your most valued possessions
or even your darkest ones.
But my zipper seals what you dont want seen nor known.
For you only have access to what belongs and what doesn't.

I too, have flaws just like you.
I'll eventually rip, tear, and fade,
but I'll support you to the best of my abilities.
You may throw me around
misplace me, or even forget about me.
I don't expect you to care as much,
but just know that a tiny bit is appreciated.

If you're considerate of me, then I got your back.
I am there for you wherever you go.
Carrying your necessities that  you intrust me with.
I hold what could be important
I had your back since pre-k
But at times, I may be in the way.
Always keep in mind that I will
have your back till
the end of your days.

Besides being useful for just storage,
I am purposeful for many things.
I am your pillow to rest on and
your shoulder to lean on.
You can always rely on me
for rest and for comfort.
I have the filament of loyalty and support.
I am there when no one is.
I am a back pack.

A CONEY ISLAND LIFE DRAFT

We were all born into this world to serve a purpose. Having the ability to think for ourselves, we make choices that will pave a sustainable path. To do so, we set our standards and we exceed them. "how many more times round I have to catch the brass-ring sun before the game is up." You knot know exactly how much time you have. Therefore, do all that you can before the opportunity is taken away from you "I take perhaps my last ride on this planet carousel" This direct quote indicates that making choices should be decided as if there was no tomorrow. You thought that was it, but you actually have one last bit of chance left.
The motive behind your determination and hard work is life's ultimate goal. Happiness. Because we all strive for the great feeling of accomplishment. No one said that achieving goals was ever easy.
